CHIPPENHAM Town caretaker manager Gary Horgan was delighted to win his first home game in charge and keep the Bluebirds’ chances of a play-off spot alive.

Alex Bray scored the only goal of the game against Oxford City on Monday to leave Chippenham eighth and just three points outside the top seven.

The narrow victory came three days after a humbling 3-0 defeat by Dorking Wanderers in Horgan’s first game as caretaker boss.

But, speaking after the more positive of the two results, Horgan praised his squad for executing the game plan perfectly as Oxford – who are guaranteed a top-six spot – left empty handed.

Horgan said: “It was my first home game in charge, and we were really pleased for the team.

“We set up to try and make them go long. We had a game plan from the start, and each and every one of the lads pulled that off to a tee really.

“I’m absolutely delighted, and it gives us the opportunity to hit those play-offs as well.

“I’ve said it anyway because of my own position, but we’ll only look at one game at a time. As soon as you look past that, you’re setting yourself up for a bit of a fall.

“We’ll be fully focused on Dulwich Hamlet this Saturday, and we will look to win that one so we can keep our season alive.”

Dulwich are one of nine teams chasing two remaining play-off spots in National League South, but the London outfit are on a woeful run of form and appear to be dipping at a crucial time.

Horgan believes the team which has not won any of its past nine games can still pose a threat to the Bluebirds, and as such he will be telling his players not to take anything for granted during Saturday’s game.

The caretaker manager said: “They haven’t been in great form of late, but they’ve got a very good side and they’re able to play out from the back as they’ve got a lot of athletic ability throughout the team.

“They’ve got some good athletes, some good footballers, but they’ve also got some good size and physicality up front.

“Mills, who plays up front for them, is more than a handful for most people at this level so we’re expecting a really tough game.

“We’ll do everything we can to prepare and give ourselves the best opportunity to go and win.”
