TROWBRIDGE boxer Callum Lee Smith is quickly realising how good he really is.

The 23-year-old featherweight recently turned professional but has already racked up three comfortable victories over a variety of his peers.

Smith beat experienced Russian fighter Viktor Vezhlivtsev on points in March before repeating the method of victory against Stefan Nicolae in June.

His latest outing, also in Cardiff, against Mohammed Al Warith saw Smith stop a fight early for the first time in his career – a huge boost to the young talent.

Trained by former middleweight world-title challenger Gary Lockett, Smith has been backed to go on and compete for national and even international belts.

The Trowbridge man was unsure he was quite capable of reaching the elite level at first, but cold, hard evidence produced in his first few bouts have encouraged him to go chasing the very best.

Smith said: “When I first started, I knew I was a very good boxer, but there was always doubts in my mind like: “could I really bang, could I hit hard?”

“After my most recent fight, I now know that I’m an amazing boxer and I can also dig (hit hard) as well.

“It’s good to see that, and the progress I’ve witnessed from myself within three fights has been amazing.

“Since turning pro, I’ve done it all by myself, and progression-wise I already look like a seasoned pro – that’s what Gary [Lockett – coach] says to me.”

With a solid foundation laid, Smith is turning his attention to what the future holds for him as a professional.

After fighting in three and four-round bouts, the hope is that Trowbridge’s latest boxing star can make the step up and participate in six-rounders before setting his sights on competing for belts in the near future.

Smith said: “Hopefully, I can get out a couple more times this year. I want to step up to six rounds in my next fight, that’s the plan, and then next year we can start looking for some title fights.

“But it’s been a great journey so far. I’ve had three fights; I’ve stopped one so far. I’ve fought people with 40 fights and five fights, so I’ve shown I’m capable of boxing anyone.

“If I can keep winning and looking good while doing it, then the sky is the limit, and we’ll see what happens. But it’s going alright at the moment.”
