CHIPPENHAM Town Football Club is getting ready to create another little piece of history for those in north Wiltshire, but chairman Neil Blackmore insists ‘The Bluebirds’ are not ready to stop just yet.

Semi-professional football club, Chippenham Town is preparing to face fully professional outfit Burton Albion on Sunday in the second round of the FA Cup.

Managed by former player Gary Horgan, the National League South team – which has already won four games to reach this stage – will face a team 71 places above them in the English football pyramid.

Having already bested Burton’s League One rivals, Lincoln City in the first round, Chippenham are potentially 90 minutes away from travelling to world-famous clubs like Manchester United and Liverpool.

As chairman of the football club, Mr Blackmore is revelling in the moment. He said: “This game is a massive deal for the club, for the town, for me as chairman of this club – it’s fantastic.

“I would say it’s every chairman’s dream, to see their team go on an FA Cup run. The FA Cup is the one thing that gives non-league football club the chance for a bit of limelight because you have the opportunity to come up against big clubs – as we have done already.

“We’ve already played Lincoln City, and we’ve got another one in Burton Albion on Sunday. We’re about to write a little bit of Chippenham history now because it’s the first time we’ve ever been in the second round.

“When we turn over Burton, Premier League clubs come into it in the next round. From there, it’s the likes of Liverpool and Manchester United.

“Imagine that – Manchester United v Chippenham Town at Old Trafford in front of 70,000 fans. It’s almost unbelievable, but it is possible thanks to the FA Cup.”

Blackmore revealed The Bluebirds will be taking over 500 fans to the Pirelli Stadium on Sunday after FA Cup fever swept through the town following the 1-0 win at home to Lincoln in the last round.

Chippenham’s chairman has been delighted to see people who do not usually attend games at the Thornbury Surfacing Stadium throw their support behind the team this weekend.

He said: “While a lot of the people going on Sunday are regular fans, many are not regular fans who are still keen to make the journey and support their town.

“It’s put a bit of buzz around the town, and even with people who might not be as interested in football or Chippenham Town.

“As I’ve said before, this cup run isn’t just good for the football club, it’s good for the town too.”
