Royal Wootton Bassett suffered a narrow defeat to Chew Valley, with the visitors clinching victory in a tense finale.

The match took place at home, marked by high winds and relentless rain. Despite the difficult conditions, both sides attempted to play constructive rugby, with early pressure from the visitors resulting in a try just nine minutes in.

Bassett responded with a determined push, culminating in a try from Scott Douglas, converted by Rhys Floyd, giving the home side a brief 7-5 lead. However, the visitors quickly countered, scoring a converted try just before half-time to take a 12-7 advantage into the break.

The second half saw Floyd's penalties keep Bassett within striking distance. A spectacular try from winger Mike Clifton briefly restored the home side's lead at 20-15. However, in a dramatic turn of events, Chew Valley scored a late converted try to secure a 22-20 victory as time ran out for Bassett.

Despite the disappointment, the home side will take a losing bonus point into their next match against league leaders Devonport Services in Plymouth next week.
