NORTH WILTS Indoor Club completed a double over Bristol in two national inter-club team championship competitions but lost out to another Gloucestershire side in a third over a four-day period, writes DAVE EATON.

They beat Bristol 85-70 in the ladies Yetton Trophy and followed that up 72 hours later last Sunday with another success when the mixed team recorded a 12 shots victory in the Egham Trophy.

However, North Wilts missed out on a hat-trick as the men went down by the narrow margin of four shots to Gloucester in the men’s premier inter-club team championship for the Denny Cup.

Previous winners of the ladies prestigious Yetton Trophy in the 2007008 season North Wilts women made an excellent start in their bid for another Yetton triumph.

But then Bristol hit back strongly to cut the gap in the next three ends to only 63-62 at 18 ends and everything to play for.

North Wilts responded with 22 shots against eight in the run-in to seal victory with Carol Grenfell’s rink scoring a six and a seven to go from 18-15 to 31-17 winners. While at home Isobel Dawson’s quartet fired in six shots to win 25-19.

THE double over Bristol was completed three days later in the Egham Trophy when North Wilts won by 12 shots as they ran-out 90-78 victors despite rink honours being shared 2-2.

The win was largely due to the North Wilts away rink led by Billy McCay that won in Bristol 34-8, and Alex Jacob’s rink who came back from 6-15 down to grab a four on the last and win 26-24.

In the first half of the match across the board the sides were tied 29-29 at five ends while Bristol had edged 43-42 up at 10.

Jacobs’ rink fought back to only trail 20-21 at 18 ends and then clinch a 26-24 win on the 21st and last end with a count of four.

On the other hand Snook was 12-14 down at 15 ends but led 17-16 at 18 but then dropped seven shots to lose 18-23.

Away in Bristol Nick Grenfell’s quartet struggled being 9-12 down at 10 ends and 12-15 at 15 but never registered another shot and went down by 11 shots.

But the bonus for North Wilts was the match winning performance from the awesome foursome of Kath Lloyd, Alan Greenland, Carol Grenfell and skip Billy McCay.

They raced into a 17-5 lead at five ends and 19-6 at ten. They never looked back and powered away to a massive 34-8 victory.

This stunning scoreline easily wiped out the two losses.
