NORTH Wilts had to give second best to local rivals Clarrie Dunbar as they lost by 14 shots in their latest derby clash this season between the two teams going down 85-71 to the Somerset side in the Egham Trophy.

Chippenham-based indoor club North Wilts only took the honours on one of the four rinks as Alex Jacobs led her quartet of Ian Bristow, Jane Taylor, Alan Small and herself to a narrow 20-17 success over Andrew Colebrooke’s foursome away at Clarrie Dunbar.

Sue Cooke’s rink lost away by five shots while at home Rich Gainey’s four only lost by a couple of shots to Graham Shadwell.

However, the big difference was the 10 shots reverse suffered by Maurice Byron’s four at home to Neil Collett’s quartet.

Across the board North Wilts were only down 18-15 at five ends but went to 38-28 at 10 ends, reduced slightly to 57-50 at 15 but then in the latter stages Clarrie pulled away again to win 85-71.

RESULTS Home - Rink 1: Norma Rowden, Robin Hardie, Jean Collier & Maurice Byron lost to Marcia Hartley, Jo Dunford, Duncan McGovern & Neil Collett 14-24. Rink 2: Bob George, Barbara Shepheard, Irene Button & Richard Gainey lost to Ruth Haines, Teresa King, Terry Perkins & Graham Shadwell 19-21.

Away - Rink 2: Dave Edmonds, Fizz Mace, Roger Button & Sue Cooke lost to Jeanette Wheeler, Sue Bird, Keith Bailey & Russell Francis 18-23. Rink 3: Ian Bristow, Jane Taylor, Alan Small & Alex Jacobs beat Thelma Bailey, Nesta Parfitt, Dale Taylor & Andy Colebrooke 20-17.

Score: North Wilts lost to Clarrie Dunbar 71-85.

HAVING won the Yetton Trophy nearly 10 years and semi-finalists last year, North Wilts ladies continue their quest season for another national inter-club championship team title.

They play neighbours Christie Miller in a second round tie on Saturday (10am), with two rinks at home in Chippenham at Westcroft and two away in Melksham at the Christie Sports Centre in Bowerhill.

North Wilts reached round two after overcoming local rivals Clarrie Dunbar in a tense opening tie local derby edging home 81-78.

THE men at North Wilts made a swift exit from this year’s 18 Denny Cup, men’s top inter-club championship event a fortnight ago.

They lost heavily in their opening round match going down 101-51 to St Andrews (Weston-Super-Mare), they now face Somerset side Isle of Wedmore (10am) this coming Saturday in the Denny Plate.
