NORTH Wilts ladies missed out in their bid to notch a treble of victories in women’s national team competitions last week.

They were successful in the Mason and Vivienne Trophy but went down by a single shot at Donyatt in the top ladies inter-club championship event, losing 74-75 to Torquay United.

North Wilts were in dominant form in their Mason Trophy, O60s double rinks, third round tie, defeating neighbours Christie Miller 53-29.

They made a good start, leading 16-9 at five ends and 29-18 after 10. They increased that to 50-24 at 15 and were 53-29 ahead when the match was conceded by Christie Miller after 16 of the scheduled 18 ends had been played.

Jean Collier’s foursome alongside Margaret Cooke, Viv Baskerville and Irene Button recorded a 33-12 victory at home over Bev Lilley’s rink, while Alex Jacobs quartet won against Sheila Garlick’s rink 20-17away.

North Wilts progress to the fourth round and tie against Taunton Deane on February 16.

North Wilts also progressed in the Vivienne Trophy, four rinks of triples for non-Yetton players, with a second round 85-65 win over Somerset side Taunton Deane.

They led 21-11 overall at five ends and 46-26 after 10. They still held an advantage 69-53 at 15 ends and finally won at 18 ends 85-65.

Top rink honours went to the triple skipped by Jan Tombs, who won their match 32-4.

In the next round of the Vivienne Trophy scheduled for Thursday, North Wilts have been paired with Devon side Isca IBC (Exeter).

A shot denied North Wilts the opportunity of completing a national team treble and progress to the semi-finals in the Yetton Trophy.

They were behind for practically the whole of their quarter-final against Devon side Torquay United but staged a grandstand finish to just miss out on a semi spot.

North Wilts made a slow start and were 22-14 down after five ends overall but had pulled the gap back to only 34-33 at 10. Torquay moved 61-42 up at 15 ends but back came North Wilts to trim the lead to only nine shots at 18 ends 69-60 and finish with a final flourish that saw them end up one shot light at 75-74.

Rink honours were shared 2-2, with Alex Jacobs’ quartet accounting for England international Sophie Tolchard with ease 24-11, while Sue Cooke’s four beat another England bowler Harriet Stevens 16-12.

However, these wins just failed to wipe the losses of 12 shots by Jean Collier’s rink and Fizz Mace’s rink, who went down by six shots.

  • NORTH Wilts men failed to arrest their run of defeats in the central region of the Wessex League.

They slumped to their fourth loss in a row when crashing to an 82-52 defeat against Bristol last Sunday and only collecting two points out of a possible 16 points.

This came courtesy of Rich Gainey’s foursome, who won their game at home at Westcroft 21-6 against Eric Seaville’s rink.

North Wilts remain in seventh place in the table and their next game on Sunday is against current central region champions Clarrie Dunbar.
