HAVING qualified for the Heineken Cup, Bath finished their season on a high with their win against Newcastle on Saturday and it looks like there are exciting times ahead.

Yes they are losing a number of players now, but there will be some new faces in over the summer, as well as those already confirmed.

With owner Bruce Craig now at the helm at the Rec, you get the impression that Bath are something of a Manchester City when it comes to players.

Anybody on the market is being linked with the club, but they have the best guy in the business running team affairs in Sir Ian McGeechan and he’ll be bringing in players he knows can do a job.

Some of the names being bandied around in connection with the club you wouldn’t want to see arrive and I’d include Danny Cipriani in that bracket.

Bath need a world-class No 10, but they don’t need a marquee signing to sell out the stadium.

They need someone who will be value for money and who can control the game.

There are not many of the sort of players who can dictate a game available at the moment and that’s going to be a problem for McGeechan.

I’ll be interested to see how they solve it.

With the likes of Cipriani and Gavin Henson, you get the impression they love being in the headlines but with all due respect, that’s all very well if you are actually doing the business on the pitch.

I’ve yet to see any rugby player who delivers on the pitch yet has successfully courted the fame game too.

Meanwhile, this weekend’s Premiership play-offs would seem to suggest victories for the home teams – Leicester over Northampton and Saracens against Gloucester.

Yet my old team Gloucester will not be afraid of going to Saracens and are a real danger side.
