A bright but chilly Thursday evening at Devizes Town football ground was the venue for the second encounter of the season for these two teams in the Blue Division.

Devizes had some encouraging attacks right from the first whistle and Chippenham were unusually untidy at the back and lucky not to concede a goal in the first five minutes.

Devizes had a free kick for a foul challenge just outside the area.

It was struck well but whizzed just wide of the post and Chippenham were let off.

After 8 minutes and a little against the run of play Chippenham opened the scoring when Marcus Fenton received the ball after some good passing between Harry Vickers and Matt Kirtley in midfield.

Marcus turned and immediately fired a long range shot that flew into the back of the Devizes net.

Two minutes later Chippenham keeper Tadgh Feerick launched a goal kick into the middle of the Devizes half, Fenton trapped the ball superbly, and in one move turned and fired again with superb accuracy and stunned Devizes with another spectacular goal to make it 2 nil.

Devizes aware of the threat from midfield got tighter marking but in a midfield tackle just minutes later the ball broke loose for Fenton again in the same spot and the Devizes defence could only watch inevitably as the technique was repeated and the ball flew into the back of the net for the third time.

A stunning hat-trick in the space of 5 minutes put Chippenham into a commanding 3 nil lead which they took to half time.

At the break substitutes Alex Bowers and Toby Ferguson came on. Chippenham despite players in some unfamiliar positions did play most of the second period in the Devizes half although Devizes made some quick breaks and Sam Fieldhouse in the Chippenham defence did very well to block these.

Devizes had a couple of free kicks in dangerous positions but were unable to convert, including a goal line scramble that was scooped away by Feerick who got injured in the process. Shortly afterwards in what was an untidy half Kieran Fitzwater received a good ball from Toby Ferguson, skipped past a defender and drove the ball into the bottom right of the Devizes goal.

Will Ferguson then replaced Will Summers to make his debut in the league and took up position in defence where he immediately found himself in the middle of the action. Chippenham then lost 2 players in quick succession when Matt Kirtley and Kieran Fitzwater both got winded in separate incidents.

Devizes sensed an opportunity and made one last push to get a goal and the pressure created a goal mouth scramble which was scooped out by Chippenham keeper Feerick who himself got injured in the mix.

A last minute free kick on the edge of the Chippenham box gave Devizes a great chance. After careful setup for the kick and with the Chippenham box and goal line full of Devizes players the strike was good and on target but was pushed over by Chippenham keeper Feerick.

The resulting corner went out for a goal kick and that signalled the end of the match with FC Chippenham earning a valuable 3 points.
