THERE was little joy for Swindon riders representing their second-tier clubs at the Championship Fours Final in Peterborough yesterday, though fans’ favourite Rasmus Jensen did scoop third place with Glasgow.
Jensen, in the company of Tigers’ teammates Craig Cook, Paul Starke and Claus Vissing, registered five points from his three rides in the competition’s grand final.
The Danish hope was denied fours glory though, as Somerset – spearheaded by Nico Covatti, Chris Harris and Rory Schlein – won the final with 22 points. Sheffield finished second following a run-off to decide the final two podium places with Glasgow.
Adam Ellis was also in action for Birmingham, but the Brummies were knocked out at the qualifying stage after only scoring eight points.
There was similar disappointment for Ellis Perks, who suffered an early exit with his Leicester Lions team mates after they scored 12 points in the qualifier.
Eventual winners Somerset sneaked through the semi-final by a point from Edinburgh.
Kurtz got nothing from the opener in the final but eight points from the next three saw the Rebels hold a one-point lead.
They were one behind Sheffield after the next four, before Harris’ second in heat nine put Somerset back in the box seat.
Leading by a point in the closing stages of the meeting, the Rebels benefitted from Schlein’s second in the final race of the afternoon, which proved enough for a three-point success.
FINAL RESULT:
SOMERSET 22: Nico Covatti 8, Chris Harris 7, Rory Schlein 6, Todd Kurtz 1.
SHEFFIELD 19 (second after run-off): Danny King 7, Kyle Howarth 4, Ty Proctor 4, Broc Nicol 4, Drew Kemp 0.
GLASGOW 19: Craig Cook 9, Rasmus Jensen 5, Paul Starke 4, Claus Vissing 1.
EASTBOURNE 12: Richard Lawson 6, Edward Kennett 4, Lewis Kerr 2, Kyle Newman 0.
