CHIPPENHAM hosted Warminster in a Wiltshire Cup match on Sunday and made a measured and confident start.

Moving the ball through several phases and exploring the opposition, they established good field position and number eight Broom picked up and broke the defence to open the scoring. Chippenham’s game play followed a similar pattern after the restart.

The forwards dominated the rucks and space soon opened up which the backs exploited well, moving the ball wide with winger Waddington’s looping pass finding full back Davies coming on the outside to run in to the corner from 20 metres and touch down under the posts and give Waters a simple conversion.

Several good breaks by Chippenham were defended well by the opposition but finally the defensive line was stretched and Waters broke through to touch down under the posts and convert.

Chippenham were off to a flyer following the break.

The forwards turned over the scrum on their 22, and the ball was fed out to the backs.

Inside centre Alcorn made an intelligent cross-field kick into space, and wing Graham gathered well, held himself up in the tackle and timed his offload to Waters who ran in to score from 15 metres to establish a 24-0 lead. Chippenham could have scored again on several occasions and Waddington was unlucky to be felled some five metres out.

Gaunt added the next score which Waters converted to take the score to 31-0.

The game was closed out by another try from Chippenham, after a lengthy rolling maul pushed them up well into the opposition half. The forwards rucked well when the ball went to ground and this led to quick ball being pushed left where Davies took Waddington’s pass and rounded off a solid victory 36-0.
