I SHOULD like to say thank you to all of your readers who took part in the Service of Remembrance at St James’ Church and the Act of Remembrance at the Trowbridge War Memorial on Sunday, November 12; it was really great to see so many at both parts of the day. We were fortunate this year to have 22 Battery from 32 Regiment Royal Artillery The Wessex Gunners with us and it was a privilege to have them march at the head of our parade behind our standards.
In this 100th anniversary year of the Third Battle of Ypres that took place at Passchendaele, we remembered in particular the 50,000 British and Commonwealth soldiers who were buried without being identified and the 42,000 who were never recovered from the Belgian fields of Flanders that turned into an ocean of mud. We also remembered those members of the Armed Forces who are in harm’s way serving on operations today in Iraq, Syria and the broader Middle East, who are undertaking peacekeeping and peace support duties around the world and who are providing support to humanitarian relief in many countries.
On behalf of the Trowbridge branch of the Royal British Legion, thank you again to your readers, and everyone else who took part, for joining us in this year’s Remembrancetide events and in showing their support for the Armed Forces community. We look forward to seeing you next year.
