This year’s annual family pantomime from the Athenaeum Masqueraders will be the classic fairytale of Sleeping Beauty, with the production running from next Wednesday to Saturday at Warminster Athenaeum.

Although the story is well-known, the masqueraders’ will be putting a modern touch on the tale, with the use of special effects and current pop songs.

The cast of about 30, including performers ranging from the age of eight to those in their 50s, have been preparing for the stage since October last year.

Claire Dalton, who is directing for the first time, said: “It basically follows the same classic story, but it has the typical panto characters that make it fun.

“We will be having popular songs as part of the music, including songs from One Direction and Little Mix, just to make it more accessible and relevant for children.

“We have also pushed the boat out with the special effects as we have a UV scene and pyrotechnics, so it’s going to be fun for all the family, with lots of laughs in there for adults.

“I’m used to being on stage and this is my first time directing, so it’s been a steep learning curve trying to get used to everything, but I have an experienced cast who are amazing.”

Tickets cost £8 and £6.50 with concessions.

Performances will take place at 7pm from February 19 to 22, with matinee shows at 2pm on February 19 and February 22.
