AT A meeting of Trowbridge Town Council’s town development committee it was clear that members were in despair about the way paving is dug up in the town centre and not replaced. This appears largely the work of the statutory undertakers, that is the people who provide gas, electricity, water etc. The council finds it very difficult to get paving replaced.
In the past, someone reinstating a footway or road surface might want to do a temporary finish and then come back later when the surface had had time to subside under traffic and do the permanent surface. However, I believe that modern trench reinstatement can avoid the need to do this.
So I would like to challenge someone from the maintenance community, be he/she with a statutory undertaker or the Wiltshire Council which oversees this work, to explain simply what the present policy is. We can then decide to challenge it if we feel it is not good enough or we can accept it and check when we feel that the policy is not being followed.
We spend a lot of money on energy, water, telecoms etc and I feel we need to see some of it used to keep our town centre looking good.
