A new generation of aspiring scientists took part in hands-on experiments and got a chance to look over a racing car from Castle Combe.

Wiltshire College’s Science Technology Engineering and Maths expo included a range of talks and activities, from architecture and surgery to playing Jenga with a robotic arm.

Pupils from Melksham Oak, Hardenhuish and Lavington schools attended and activities also included a mock virus outbreak for pupils to manage, a video conference with a heart surgeon from Spain, a tank driving simulator and a 3D printing workshop.

Held at the Trowbridge and Salisbury campuses, STEM is intended to encourage students from Wiltshire’s schools to consider scientific careers and demonstrate options available.

Wiltshire College learning director Mark Thompson said: “The importance of STEM within the economy is highlighted more and more frequently at the moment.

“It was good to have a range of employers convey messages about the skills they seek and the potential employment opportunities open to students.”
