Soldiers from 3 Yorks will be taking part in a 100-mile ride for the Bike Bath event on June 22 and 23, with the Yorkshire Regiment encouraging other military units to join up.

Bike Bath initially approached the Warminster-based battalion last year, to invite it to enter a team of cyclists for one of the 30, 60 or 100-mile rides that take place during a weekend of cycling.

However, the regiment’s imminent departure on a six-month Afghanistan tour meant it was unable to join the inaugural cycling event.

But 3 Yorks has now entered a team for this year’s festival of cycling, as well as supporting the 100-mile rides, known as the Bath Centurions, by inviting other military units to enter.

Sergeant Major Duncan Wyeth, who is part of the 3 Yorks cycle team, said: “The popularity of cycling is very high in the Yorkshire Regiment and Bike Bath is a great opportunity for soldiers from the region, but also further afield, to take part.

“The fact the route passes our own doorstep in Warminster on the Saturday means we can give all riders an insight into our military world.

“We will also be organising the feed stations and providing a few surprises.

“We would be delighted if cycling teams from other military units could join us over the weekend and possibly compete in both 100-mile rides on the Saturday and Sunday.”
