The organisers of the 29th Corsham 10k are heralding this year’s race the best ever, following a record-breaking day on Sunday.

Nearly 1,300 people attended the St George’s Day-themed run, which started at Corsham Town Football Club, with many runners dressed as St George or the Dragon.

Race director Alex Fogwill said: “We had 810 runners on the day, the most we’ve ever had. It was dry and chilly, so once people got going it was ideal weather conditions.

“The race involves the whole community – we even had the Corsham Junior Wind-band playing as the runners raced past.”

The main beneficiary of the race was the Motor Neurone Disease Association, in honour of former firefighter Martin O’Shea, who watched the race from his wheelchair.

Firefighters tackled the course in full kit, raising over £5,000 for the running club’s chosen charities.

A team of mums from the Corsham Primary School PTA also took part, with many running for the first time. Physiotherapist Jane Clarke had led the group of 18 through an extensive training regime.

She said: “They did brilliantly, everyone finished.”

The school also fielded head of the Broadwood site, Anthony Welch, and teachers James Passmore and Clare Vines, who all completed the course in under an hour.

Mrs Clarke said: “We’re now thinking of doing the Chippenham half, and I’m sure that we’ll all keep on running.”
