Warminster churchgoers are preparing to go on hunger strike tomorrow in support of a nationwide fast to highlight the need for G8 leaders to act on ending hunger.

The event is one of many happening around the country, called The Big IF Fast, organised by the Enough Food for Everyone IF campaign.

All of Salisbury Diocese’s senior clergy and staff are taking part in the day-long strike, as are churchgoers from around Warminster.

Sarah Condry, the wife of Bishop of Ramsbury Ed Condry, has arranged the strike in Warminster with Sheelagh Wurr, who is a member of St John’s Church in Warminster.

Mrs Condry said: “We want to draw attention to the fact that one in eight people around the world go hungry every day and to reflect on the outrageous truth that there is enough food in the world for everyone, but not everyone has enough.”

Each church in Warminster will be open for an hour during the day for prayer to encourage the G8 to take immediate action on global hunger when it meets later this month in Northern Ireland.

Those taking part in the hunger strike or anyone interested in joining them in silent prayer during the event can visit a church in the town at the following times:

Christchurch from 11am-12pm, Minster from 12.15pm-1.15pm, St Lawrence from 1.30pm-2.30pm and United Church from 2.45pm-3.45pm.
