Westbury Amateur Swim-ming Club hopes to be fully compensated by Wiltshire Council for money lost while the swimming pool was closed from March to June, after submitting a claim last week.

The compensation claim is for about £3,000 and takes into account the members the club has lost, as well as travel expenses, costs for using other pools and refunds for cancelled sessions.

The pool was originally expected to close for three to four weeks from March 4 so repairs could be carried out by contractors after the new pool lining failed, but further issues resulted in the opening being put back to June 10.

The council eventually appointed a new contractor to carry out the repairs on the pool, while seeking the full cost of the work needed from the original contractors.

Westbury Amateur Swimm-ing Club secretary Neil Tribick said: “We put in our compensation claim last week and I have had an acknowledgement from the pool’s manager, so it will now be passed on to Wiltshire Council.

“In total, the compensation claim is about £3,000 and it could have possibly been more as we are not sure how many members we have definitely lost during the closure.

“We know that seven people have left the club for certain and we believe there may be a fair few more, but as we cannot be sure we haven’t added them into the claim.

“We will try to encourage the members we have lost back, but that will take time.

“The closure for refurbishment in November was fine, but when we had the extended closure from March people voted with their feet.

“The council previously said it would make sure that the club was not financially disadvantaged by the closure, so hopefully it is as good as its word. We will now have to look at building our membership back up.”
