Warminster showed its support for the newly-named 1st Battalion, the Yorkshire Regiment during a parade through the streets of the town today, with hundreds turning out to cheer on the troops.

Around 250 soldiers took part in the parade, which marked the change of the regiment's title from 3rd Battalion, the Yorkshire Regiment and the awarding of the Freedom of the Town - initially given to the Battlesbury Barracks-based regiment in 2012.

The route saw the soldiers start at Station Road, moving into Market Place, High Street, George Street, Silver Street and Church Street and finish at the Minster Church for a private service.

As part of the parade, The Lord Lieutenant of Wiltshire, Sarah Troughton took salute along with the Mayor of Warminster Paul Batchelor.

Among the crowd was Sue Underwood, of Folly Lane, who said: "We always try and come down for the parades as we like to support our troops.

"We have only been in Warminster for 18 months and it's good to see how many people turn out every time there is a parade.

"The regiment is very important to Warminster and the community always shows it's appreciation for what they do. The atmosphere is always fantastic and it was again today."

Dennis Hill, of Luxfield Road, said: "It was a very good parade. I have been to many of the parades over the years and it's great that they can always pull such a great crowd.

"The regiment means a lot to everyone in the town and it was a relief that they remained based in Warminster. They are very important to what makes the town such a great place to live.

"I never miss a parade as I believe it is vitally importantly that we continue to support our troops."
