Wiltshire Fire and Rescue service attended only two incidents during this afternoon's four-hour strike, with none in the Wiltshire Times' patch.

128 firefighters across the county took part in the strike from midday to 4pm, with 120 remaining on duty.

Crews were called to a small fire in a light fitting in Salisbury and a dishwasher fire in Swindon, with none of the areas covered by the striking crews in Trowbridge, Melksham or Warminster affected.

To deal with the strike, the service introduced four ‘resilience’ fire crews to provide cover from alternative locations in Swindon, Warminster, Melksham and Salisbury, which were available alongside on-call crews.

Over the course of the strike, Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service maintained 16 fire engines as available; on an average day, the Service would expect to have around 24 appliances available.

As of 4pm, all striking crews returned to duty.

Chief Fire Officer Simon Routh-Jones said: “I am obviously very pleased that we have had a quiet afternoon across the county, and my thanks go to those firefighters who continued to work through the strike period and maintain such a good level of emergency response for our communities.

"We have done a great deal of planning for this industrial action and this has been very successful, with no issues during the four hours.”
