LIVING history re-enactments and a display map of local Army camps will be the centrepieces of Codford’s First World War centenary commemorations next year.

With the First World War centenary less than a year away, Codford Local History Society has released a provisional programme for its Wylye Valley 1914 Project.

There will be a range of activities throughout June and July, leading up to the main events over the weekend of July 26 and 27 at Codford Village Hall and Field.

That weekend will include an exhibition at the village hall, with an interpretative display map of Army camps between Longbridge Deverill and Codford.

There will also be living history demonstrations by the Great War Society and Yeomanry on the field, giving people an insight into life at the time.
Codford Local History Society was one of many to benefit from the Heritage Lottery Fund’s First World War: Then and Now programme, giving out grants from £3,000 to £10,000 across the UK.

Group member Alex Saunt said: “There will likely be some more additions before the start of the programme, but the events are pretty much sorted now and it should be a great occasion.

“The committee has been working on this for over two years and we have considered a number of different ideas. There is a lot of involvement with the schools, as it is important to engage with the children.

“We are hoping that lots of people will be able to come to the events over the weekend.
“The exhibition should be fascinating for everyone, especially those with a keen interest in the war, and the interpretative display map will probably be the most popular exhibit, as it is very detailed.”
