Wiltshire Council is looking into the possibility of Trowbridge’s new campus including healthcare facilities.

Mark Stone, Wiltshire Council’s Transformation Programme’s service director, said talks are going on with Wiltshire’s Clinical Commissioning Group (CQC) about bringing improved medical services to Trowbridge.

“There is a real interest in bringing more health facilities to Trowbridge,” said Mr Stone told last Thursday’s Trowbridge Area Board meeting.

“There’s a recognition that this town has been treated poorly over the years and we are determined to deliver the best campus possible for Wiltshire’s county town.”

Trowbridge Town Cllr Peter Fuller said: “We all know how fast the NHS operate so if we wait for them we could be waiting forever for our campus.

“Action needs to be taken before the money runs out.”

Colin Kay, COB chairman, said: “The opportunity to have healthcare facilities within the campus is a very exciting one providing it doesn’t delay the process.”

Trowbridge’s Shadow Community Operations Board (COB), appointed by the council to oversee the consultation stage of the project, has run surveys of the public. Based on more than 2,000 responses, among facilities town residents wanted to see the campus offer were swimming, sports and IT facilities.

During the meeting, Wiltshire Council also provided an update on the future of the derelict former Peter Black site, next to the town’s new £17m St Stephen’s Place Leisure Park.

Councillors want the area to be turned into a car park while a long-term plan is devised.

Tim Martienssen, head of service delivery, economy and regeneration, said: “We are interested in purchasing the site, however Wiltshire Council has to be sensible how it invests.”
