With all the changes we have had in Trowbridge recently, with more to come, isn’t it time we stopped wishing the town was something it’s not – and maybe never was – and start to accept it for what it is.

I’ve now sampled the new cinema for myself (very good too, though the usual frustration over automatic ticket machines – why can’t they have at least one staffed ticket booth?) and also been to a performance in the old Town Hall.

Also excellent, the acoustics being much better than you might expect although clearly there is still a lot of work to do on the building.

The revamp of County Hall is finally finished (thank goodness that hideous ramp has gone from the Bythesea Road frontage), the library is a triumph and the atrium coffee shop great, though a bit noisey and maybe a little lacking in privacy for some of the meetings held there.

Once again the town’s shops supplied most of my Christmas gifts – though a few things did come online, lots were bought right here.

Trowbridge is never going to be the centre of the universe: if people could get the idea that ‘everything should be right here’ out of their heads, and look at what we actually have, maybe they would start taking more of a pride in the place.

As the old joke goes, Nostalgia ain’t what is used to be. Constantly harking back to what we may have once had has stopped things moving forwards around here for quite long enough. Time to look at what we’ve got and make the mostof it.
