You recently featured in From the Files section of your paper an entry from December 5, 1958, regarding a Hula Hoop Competition at the Town Hall that was jointly won by Marilyn Drew aged 13 years. The competition took place following knock out sessions over several weeks at the Top Twenty Club that ran every Friday evening.

My name is now Marilyn Stowe and I am proud to have joined the Friends of the Town Hall. The Friends are a dedicated team of people hoping to see the Town Hall be used to its full potential in the future as the hub of the community.

My husband and I, together with other Friends conduct guided tours of the wonderful building from the caretaker’s flat down to the Victorian cells every Wednesday.

It is thanks to the efforts of two of our members that the town hall clock face is lit again. It was fixed in time to shine out over the town centre for the Christmas Lights ceremony. The Town Hall had its own light-up ceremony.

I hope my letter will bring back memories of the happy times we all spent in the Town Hall when we were young.

Marilyn Stowe, Farleigh Avenue, Trowbridge.
