So many negative things have been said and written about the Royal United Hospital of late that I feel I must write about my experience in support of the staff and the hospital.

I was admitted by ambulance to the A&E department with a life-threatening condition. The ambulance crew were outstanding. The A&E staff treated me with the utmost care and kindness. I required emergency surgery, followed by a nine day stay in the Intensive Therapy Unit. Not only was I well cared for, but also my family.

Waterhouse ward became my home for the next three weeks. I cannot fault the staff and the care they administered, the cleanliness of the ward, even the food was admirable. The Royal United Hospital has an outreach team who regularly monitored my progress throughout my stay, ensuring my condition continued to improve.

The unsung heroes who rarely get a mention include physiotherapists, occupational therapists and the stoma nurses. Without all these dedicated, skilled and supportive people I feel I would not have made the recovery that I have.

I would like to say thank you to everyone involved in my care, without them I would not be here today. So let’s not only hear about the negatives, the positives are equally important. Because when you really need this hospital and its skilled staff, it will be there for you. It was for me.
