I usually drive to Swindon on Sundays to see my family. However, following all the publicity in local papers, plus an information sheet and guide to trains running through Melksham to Swindon on Sundays as from May 18, I decided to leave the car on the drive.

According to the sheet that came with the train guide, there is a service from Melksham to Swindon at 10.46am on Sundays. The Trainline shows this service to be 10.47am and the timetable at the actual railway station shows 10.44am.

Having arrived at 10.35am I was in plenty of time, three hours early in fact, as according to the information machine, the train I wanted to catch, plus the next one were cancelled and the first train to stop at Melksham was 1.45pm.

went home and got into my car. I was really looking forward to my trip and shopping before I went to my family’s for lunch. To say I was very disappointed is an understatement and as May 18 was the first day of the new timetable, not a very good start.

So much for the wonderful new service that links Melksham with the rest of the country.

I’ve booked to go on holiday by train, picking it up in Chippenham. I shan’t be relying on the train to get there, more likely it’ll be by taxi.
