Westbury’s campus project is taking a step forward as Westbury Area Board has endorsed working proposals for a three-site campus to keep the town’s Victorian swimming pool, library and Leighton recreation centre open.

Members of the community campus team explained the proposals, formed after lengthy consultation with local people, at a meeting last Thursday.

The scheme, part of Wiltshire Council’s countywide community campus project, will keep the three centres and upgrade them to provide better accessible facilities.

The working proposals were approved by the area board councillors and will now be passed to Wiltshire Council to be looked at for feasibility and viability.

They include renovating Westbury’s historic pool, with an updated reception and changing facilities, and refurbishing the library with an extension to make room for additional services and a café.

The proposals were made following lengthy consultation with residents and the aim is to make the library the focal point; to enhance the front of the building remodelling it into a predestrian-only piazza; and redevlop Leighton Recreation Centre.

That centre would be updated and refurbished, both indoors and out.

Area board chairman David Jenkins said: “There is still a long way to go.

“We still need to build up the business case and a feasibility study needs to be carried out before we get to what the final campus looks like, but the proposals are now with Wiltshire Council.

“It is the initial step forward ... hopefully the timescale will become clearer next year.”
