People are being encouraged to stay fit and healthy by joining more than 1,400 local people who already take part in free walking groups across Wiltshire.

Groups are led by trained leaders, meet every week and last for approximately one hour. Very often they end with a cup of tea and a chat in a local café.

Walking in a group is a great way to get active and stay motivated, make new friends and discover new places to walk locally.

Anyone who is able to meet the physical demands of the walk is welcome to turn up at the meeting point, and it’s free and fun. Unfortunately, dogs are not permitted on the walks.

Maggie Rae, corporate director for public health, said: “We are determined to give people in Wiltshire as many opportunities as possible to take part in healthy activities.

“Walking with others is fun, healthy and sociable, and the number of people taking part speaks for itself.”

Jonathon Seed, cabinet member for leisure, said: “Walking can do wonders for people’s wellbeing. It's good for bodies and minds and, because it gives people the chance to get out and meet new people, it can be great for social lives too. Best of all, it's easy and no fancy equipment is needed to get started.”

The programme is also looking for people to help lead walks. Free walk leader training and support is provided. Many walkers have discovered new friends, new routes around their home and new found confidence in their health and fitness.
