AS there are many old and disabled people, often living alone, some with no relatives nearby, each Trowbridge Lion befriends a small number of these, taking them on the occasional outing and keeping a caring eye on them. The lions affectionately refer to them as ‘Grannies’, even though some are men.

One of the regular outings took place early in June when 26 Grannies were taken on a canal trip from Bradford Wharf to Avoncliff Aqueduct on the Barbara McClellan. This is a trip which we aim to do each year and always get well looked after by the crew. Afternoon tea was served on the return journey by the Lions who accompanied their grannies, taking them to and from the Wharf and looking after them on board. It is the favourite outing for manyand very much appreciated.

As with us all, people get older and gradually have to drop out of the outings, so we are always looking for new ‘Grannies’ ideally single, living alone, with few relatives in the area, but any person living alone and getting few outings is always a welcome addition to our lists. If you know anyone like this please contact John Greenaway on 01225 753489. The next outing in September is a drive around the area followed by a fish and chip supper.
