A NEW Radstock Co-operative store has opened its doors in Hilperton, making it the first branch of the society to open outside of Somerset.

The store has been fitted out with energy-efficient chillers, freezers and lighting and low-level fixtures giving the illusion of space.

Planners claim the layout has been designed to provide a light and spacious environment with wide aisles to ease navigation and plenty of natural light providing for an enjoyable shopping experience.

Don Morris, chief executive of Radstock Co-operative, said: “I am delighted that we have secured this particular site for the society.

“It means that for the first time we have extended our geographical trading area from Somerset into another county.

“We are approaching our 150th anniversary in 2018, and remain committed to growing the retail estate to ensure the society is sustainable for future generations.”

The new store is situated on a corner plot at the edge of the new Castle Mead residential development with neighbouring Castle Mead primary school just 100 metres away.

It was officially opened on Wednesday (January 18) at 9am by pupils from the school, who performed the cutting-of-the-ribbon ceremony before being given a tour of the shop.

To mark the occasion of the society’s involvement with the community, a cheque for £300 was presented to the school's headteacher, Tracey Boulton.

Jobs have been handed to over 20 local people and the society hopes links will be forged with local groups and organisations to support the community.
