Police have closed Timbrell Street, Charlotte Square, Islington, British Row and Seymour Road while officers investigate.

The Rev Allan Coutts said: "We have had to cancel our Sunday service due the investigation. No officers are working in the churchyard but they are working in York Buildings."

Forensic scientists are centering their investigation around York Buildings where screams were heard this morning.

Julian Chandler, who was staying with his partner in Timbrell Street, said: "It is crazy - you just don't expect it here. I heard screaming from the Poplar Lane area and since then I have been up all morning making cups of tea for the coppers.

"We had just gone to bed when it happened and then the windows started rattling and the helicopter landed up at the cricket club for about an hour."

Residents living in the vicinity of the crime scenes have to sign in and out with officers before leaving or entering the area. Denise Barrett and Wesley Henry, who live in Charlotte Court and Charlotte Square, said the news was devastating.

"I have lived here for ten years and we have never had anything like this before," Ms Barrett said.

"You get fights and little arguments from people coming back from nightclubs but nothing like this.

"It makes you feel scared but it is not right that another young lad has been taken away. I feel so sorry for his family - what a shock it must be."

More to follow.
