A COACH got stuck in Bradford on Avon for five hours today as it headed to North Yorkshire after it hit some scaffolding on a house at around midday.
The coach, which only had one person on board, was being driven by and Army Infantry driver from Warminster Garrison to Catterick Garrison, a five-hour journey, but only made it 12 miles before getting stuck after hitting some scaffolding on a house in the narrow Belcombe Road.
Newtown was closed and the coach was stuck there until around 5pm, causing delays for drivers.
Bristol-based company Skyhook Scaffolding, which put the scaffolding up last month so that residents could carry out some gutter work, was called to take it down and spent three hours disassembling it.
Scaffolder Ross Hook, 17, said: “It’s pretty annoying as we had to do another job in Bristol today which we’ll have to do another time.
“Plus it means their gutter work hasn’t been finished, so we'll probably have to come back and put the scaffolding back up.
Wiltshire Council’s highways team was called out to make sure the road was safe before the coach continued onwards to North Yorkshire.
Angry residents said heavy goods vehicles and coaches getting stuck in Belcombe Road is a common problem which has caused damage to properties and they want something done about it – full story in next week’s Wiltshire Times.
