ANGRY residents have urged Wiltshire Council to get a move on and fix a roundabout that has been out of action in a children's play area in Trowbridge for two years.

The Beech Grove play area is a popular spot for children and families, with its climbing wall, swings, running track, seesaw and more.

However despite assurances from the authority to Derek Adams, chairman of The College Residents Association, that the out of commission roundabout would have a brand new one put in its place, Wiltshire Council are still in negotiations with Trowbridge Town Council about taking on this play area and 23 others in the town.

"This has gone on far too long now. I am hugely disappointed that it has taken this long. Children should be using it but Wiltshire Council has let them down," said Mr Adams.

"People come up to me asking if it will be fixed and for a long time I have had to say, 'I have not heard anything from Wiltshire Council'. This is the summer and the roundabout should be used by children and families but that is not the case.

"It was a very popular part of the play area. The play area is still used but it is sad that it has been out of commission for so long.

"I, along with many other local residents, just wish Wiltshire Council would get its act together and hand it over to the town council who can go about making these repairs.

"We are now doing fundraisers to try and get this sorted ourselves."

Before the services can be transferred from Wiltshire Council, a lease or management agreement needs to be agreed and then the £4,500 repairs to the roundabout can go ahead.

Trowbridge Town councillor David Halik said: "This is an ongoing saga and I feel sorry for the families who cannot use this during the summer as it should have been sorted a long time ago.

"The finishing line is not yet in sight and that is frustrating. When the town council does eventually get these play areas transferred, steps can be taken to fix things like this but we do not know the costs yet."

A Wiltshire Council spokesman said: “We apologise for any inconvenience this is causing, and will ensure the playground is safe while we continue to work on the transfer to Trowbridge Town Council.

“This transfer will ensure there is a locally-funded, long-term solution to issues such as this.”
