CYCLING enthusiasts in Trowbridge went hell for leather in a spinathon in aid of Sport Relief on Tuesday.

Active Trowbridge organised the static cycle ride, which took place at Sainsbury’s, British Row, and involved people chipping in for a few miles to ride the equivalent of London to Paris.

The Active Trowbridge staff were joined by Sainsbury’s employees, Anytime Fitness workers, who provided the cycling machines, and Trowbridge Mayor Deborah Halik too on the 200+ mile ride.

Organiser Holly-Anne Ritson-Thomas said: “I came up with the idea and I got my Active Trowbridge colleagues to help me put this together.

“We have all been chipping in from 9am-2pm. People have really enjoyed helping out and raising funds for a good cause.”

Store manager Kevin Rowse was delighted to host the spinathon.

“We were looking to raise funds for Sports Relief, so when Active Trowbridge contacted us, we leapt at the chance,” he said.

“I am a little bit sore in the legs after my shift but it is great to see so many people getting involved.”

When all was said and done, the team raise £128 for the cause. Ms Thomas, who is on a placement from Southampton Solent University, organised it all.

Mayor Deborah Halik added: “I did a few miles on the bike to help out the team, which was really good fun. I want to thank Anytime Fitness for the bikes and Sainsbury’s for hosting this lovely idea.”

Static bikes and running machines are being set up outside Tesco Extra in Trowbridge on Friday (March 23) for a Ironman Triathlon World Record attempt, for Sport Relief.

Westbury’s Proto-Col, a natural beauty and nutrition business, are organising the event in aid of Sport Relief in the entrance of the County Way store. It will run from 3-10pm and will involve team members and top athletes too. They will do the swim elsewhere.

Schools across the county are also getting involved by doing runs, dressing up or putting on cake sales.

The record stands at 7:40:23 with a swim split of 48:16 (1:16 per 100m), bike split of 4:06:56 (44km/h) and run split 2:44:46 (4min / km).

Sport Relief, from March 17-23, happens every two years and raises money to help vulnerable people in the UK and across the globe.
