PEOPLE in Bradford on Avon are being urged to get involved in a final major event to commemorate three historic centenaries this autumn.

2018 marks the 100th anniversaries of the end of the First World War, the Suffragette Movement gaining the right to vote for some women, and the formation of the Royal Air Force.

All three will be marked with more than 40 events in Countdown to Peace, leading up to Armistice Day and the Remembrance Day service, which this year both fall Sunday, November 11.

Cllr Simon McNeill-Ritchie, who is co-ordinating the events on behalf of Bradford on Avon Town Council, said: “We are planning a series of events over a 10-day period as a reminder of the sacrifices that were made by the men, women and children of the town.

“We have got about 40 events taking place in the run-up to November 11 and we are looking for individuals, children, families and organisations to take part.”

The events will cover the social history of the period, music, cycling, and what the men and women of the town did during the war, on the battlefield and at home.

They will include reconstructing a replica of a First World War trench system in the Tithe Barn, with re-enactment volunteers led by Aaron Couldrake, of Westbury.

There will also be a four-day symposium at St Margaret’s Hall with leading historians talking about different aspects of the war.

The events will raise funds for the Royal British Legion and SSAFA, the soldiers, sailors and air force charity.
