THE Jubilee Beacon was lit at the White Horse in Westbury on Thursday night by the Vice Lord-Lieutenant of Wiltshire.

William Wyldbore-Smith said it was a "huge privilege and honour" to represent the Queen in lighting the Beacon.

There was also a special bugle rendition of ‘Majesty’ played at the historic White Horse site.

Dignitaries from across Wiltshire, Westbury Town Councillors and members of the public were invited to witness the iconic ceremony, which took place on the same day as the Jubilee tea party held in the High Street.

Vice Lord-Lieutenant Wyldbore-Smith said: "What a glorious event we are celebrating,  unique – no monarch has reigned for 70 years in our history and is unlikely to do so again.

"We celebrate not only the length but the dedication and unswerving adherence by Her Majesty to that oath she made on her 21st birthday back in 1947 whereby she dedicated her life to our service."

He thanked the Mayor of Westbury councillor Sheila Kimmins, and the rest of the team who have organised the Jubilee celebrations in the town and especially "this evening here on top of the world".

He added: "Indeed I understand that you have already organised and enjoyed a Children’s Tea Party in the town; such a happy and traditional way to celebrate,  by coming together. That is just what reflects everything Her Majesty stands for – neighbours, family, friends and community being together.  For her that includes every one whatever background, race, creed or gender both here in the United Kingdom and overseas across the entire Commonwealth and Dependant Territories – the Queen has stood for our common values : Integrity, Peace, neighbourly care, friendship, understanding and celebration of our differences, personal freedom under the Law.

"Her Majesty’s message today is that she has been inspired by the Goodwill shown to her by communities, families and neighbours from across the entire Commonwealth coming together to mark this Platinum Jubilee.

"The Queen will shortly light her Beacon at Windsor as her message of hope reflects that inspiration. Here at Westbury, we will light ours, spreading our message together with those coming from all beacons to be lit as you will be able to see out there and beyond.

"Our message of Gratitude for all that has been achieved these past 70 years and especially for Her Majesty’s steadfast example and the Hope we all have that we can together look to the future with confidence and enthusiasm."
