A TROWBRIDGE schoolgirl unveiled her winning design for a new entrance sign outside the town's station.

Thirteen-year-old Beth Webb, who goes to St Augustine's Catholic College, won a Trowbridge in Bloom competition to design the station sign with a drawing of the town hall, town bridge and market place.

The judges chose her design because of its traditional look, and reflection of Trowbridge's heritage.

Beth's design beat dozens of entries from St Augustine's and John of Gaunt schools.

She said: "We had to do it in class and I just did buildings that were related to Trowbridge town that were quite well known.

"I was very pleased to win. I really like art, and I like designing things."

The art department at St Augustine's set the competition as a project for Year Nine pupils, and chose the best drawings for entry.

Head of department Mike Quigley said: "We try to enter as many local and national art competitions as we can, and we're obviously delighted that Beth has won this."

Melanie Teal, competition judge and chairman of Trowbridge in Bloom, said: "The design remembers our history. Because of the heritage look to signage around the town it made sense to go for a historical view.

"Her design complements the colours and signage already in Trowbridge."

The old sign, designed by John of Gaunt pupils, had been vandalised and, as it depicted Ushers brewery, was out of date.

Beth unveiled her sign with Mrs Teal and Councillor John Knight as part of the prize.

She also visited the Consortium headquarters in Trowbridge with a friend, where they had a tour of the graphic design department.
