A TREE fell onto power cables over a road in Trowbridge last night.

The braches of the tree, in Frome Road, became entangled in the power lines just after 5pm.

The incident happened between the College Road junction and Southwick Country Park.

The police were called to the scene and they contacted the electricity company to isolate the power in that area.

Police officers initially blocked off the whole road and put diversions in place. They later opened half the road and called Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service to remove the branches and trim down the tree.

Just before 7pm, once the safety work had been carried out, the road was cleared and the power was restored to the area.

There was also a crash at Wingfield crossroads where the A366 meets the B3109.

The traffic lights at the four-way junction had been out of action since yesterday morning.

This morning there was a crash involving a white van and grey Volvo s40. It is not known whether anyone was hurt.

Last night and this morning electrical engineers have been at the site to repair the faulty traffic lights.
