Wiltshire Council has received a planning application that proposes the demolition and relocation of the Physiotherapy Department at Chippenham Community Hospital.

According to the application, the lightweight timber frame building has become dilapidated and is “beyond its serviceable lifecycle.”

Its demolition would mean the relocation of the department, which itself would require work on other areas and buildings in the hospital grounds.

This work would include roof replacements, remodelling and refurbishment of the Wessex Suite, physiotherapy treatment room adaptations, and boiler replacements.

The application notes: “The internal decoration within the proposed physiotherapy area is tired and needs to be renewed, using finishes appropriate for the surfaces and use.

“Damp remediation works are also required in this area to make the building suitable for use.”

The new physiotherapy department would provide seven treatment rooms for outpatient physiotherapy services to replace those lost in the planned demolition.  

The listed building proposed for remodelling dates back to the 19th century and was designed by Christopher C Creeke in a Dutch Renaissance style.

The application states: “The project approach is to retain and repair elements where possible using traditional techniques and quality materials in keeping with the original design intent for the building.

“Elements to be upgraded will be done so sympathetically to maintain the original character and appearance of the building.”
