Chippenham MP and Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology Michelle Donelan has praised the £500m AI investment included in the autumn statement.

Chancellor Jeremy Hunt announced a boost to the UK’s AI industry in his autumn statement on Wednesday, November 22, designed to fund the next generation of supercomputers and AI innovation.

Conservative MP Donelan took to X – formerly known as Twitter – to express her support of this measure.
 


The AI Safety Summit took place in early November 2023, in Buckinghamshire.

Donelan opened the event with a speech defining the task of developing “artificial intelligence as a force for good”, before speaking of the benefits and risks AI poses to society.

In May 2023, the MP announced she would contest  the new parliamentary constituency of Melksham & Devizes for the Conservative Party in the next General Election.

Donelan has held the position of Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology since July 2023, when she returned from maternity leave.

She recently travelled to the US to speak to tech companies about channelling more investment into the UK.

She also visited Imperial College London to see the cutting-edge AI technology used for health purposes.

According to the HM Treasury, The UK’s AI industry employed over 50k people and contributed £3.7bn to the economy last year.
