Wiltshire Council has granted a premises licence to the Asda Express at the East Street Service Station in Warminster.

The application sought out permission to sell alcohol overnight and provide late night refreshments.

It was considered by the licensing sub committee at a hearing on Monday, December 11, following the objection of four local residents worried about the impact on antisocial behaviour.

One of these residents said: “The store is located in a largely residential area and is in close proximity to pubs, takeaways and restaurants all of which are closed by 11.00pm.

“This time is generally accepted as the time when licensed hours cease and there can be no good reason to make a service station on the outskirts of the town centre and in a residential area a focus for those who wish to continue consuming alcohol.”

In response to these concerns, the applicant agreed to limit the sale of alcohol on the premises from 6.00am to midnight and ensure that the extent of the late night refreshments was limited to hot drinks only.

The representative from Asda attending the hearing noted that this was in an effort to be “good neighbours.”

He also reminded those present that no responsible authorities had objected to the license and that safety measures would be put in place at the service station such as full digital CCTV and staff training.

The licence was granted by the committee.
