PUPILS at John of Gaunt School in Trowbridge have been taking part in a significant reorganisation.

From September the school will be organised into a vertical tutor group system which means pupils from all years will come together in separate tutor classes.

In advance of the move, pupils and teachers were asked to vote on four new house names, which will separate the whole school into four groups.

Assemblies were held to ballot every student, member of staff and support staff.

The new names are Greenfield, Newton, Franklin and Hawking, named after men and women who have made significant contributions to science, maths and computing.

Jane Asplin, assistant headteacher and head of Hawking house said: "This will help us create, define and help underpin a more mature attitude to learning across the school."

In another school initiative on Friday, Year 10 students took part in an industry themed day.

Organised by Helen Kerr, the event was designed to prepare students more fully for a week of work experience in September.

Students met and worked with a range of employers, learning about different employment sectors and developing the kinds of skills need to be successful and effective in the workplace.

On Tuesday a group of Year 10 students studying textiles handed over dresses they have made to be given to disadvantaged children in Romania.

Operation Christmas Child coordinator, Judith Whalley, is visiting the eastern European country with another charity Teams4U to help out with a summer camp for children there and will be taking the clothes made by John of Gaunt students with her.
