As Rodbourne's Co-op prepares to close, we've looked back at vintage snapshots of other Swindon supermarkets.

The Rodbourne Road retailer has been serving the community for more than a century but will shut for good on Saturday evening as new owners take charge of the premises and rebrand it.

These photos from Swindon Libraries' Local Studies department show staff and customers visiting branches of the Co-op in Commercial Road, Eldene, Regent Street, and Rodbourne.

The Eldene store proved to be particularly popular after it opened in the early 1970s, with signs advertising low prices that are a far cry from today's less affordable offers, and the shelves are full of colourful consumer products.

White-jacketed employees behind the meat counter prepare to carve up fresh produce while blue-uniformed till staff help keep the queues down by serving shoppers swiftly and with a smile.

The oldest image in this gallery dates back to the 1930s, with staff standing proudly outside the Commerical Road store.
