Wiltshire Council has identified a suspect after a “huge” amount of rubbish was fly-tipped in the county’s countryside.

The large amount of waste was dumped on the edge of the Salisbury Plain, near Warminster, and discovered by council officers on Wednesday, February 14.

A wide range of items were left abandoned in the wooded area, including what appeared to be IT equipment, furniture, children’s toys, and crisp packets.

The council says it has evidence that has allowed them to identify a suspect and they will now be invited to an interview under caution.

Speaking on Twitter, a spokesperson said: “We found this huge fly-tip yesterday (Wednesday, February 14).

“We would ask if anyone recognises it, but there's no need - we have evidence and will be in touch.

“We're Targeting fly-tippers.”

The punishment for fly-tipping small scale waste is a fixed penalty notice of £400 but can range to an unlimited fine and even imprisonment in more extreme circumstances.

Wiltshire Council has pledged to crack down on fly-tipping and now operates camera surveillance in a number of areas identified as hotspots for dumping rubbish.

Fly-tipping can be reported via 0300 4560100.
