A busy road in Wiltshire was closed by police for eight hours on Saturday morning after a serious crash between two lorries.

Wiltshire Police were first called to the incident, on the A36 in Warminster, just before 4am on Saturday, March 2, after heavy snow overnight had caused two heavy good vehicles to crash.

According to National Highways, which also attended the scene, the two lorries lost traction in the snow and crashed before breaking down in the carriageway.

Although both drivers managed to escape without serious injuries, a diversion route was put in place and the busy road was closed in both directions while the lorries were recovered.

This took eight hours and caused major traffic build-up and delays on surrounding roads which faced increased pressure.

Just after midday, a spokesperson from National Highways confirmed that the road had been reopened.

"There are no significant delays in the area. Thanks for your patience this morning," said a spokesperson for National Highways.

A spokesperson for Wiltshire Police added: "We attended the A36 at Warminster shortly before 4am this morning (02/03) following reports of two HGVs that had become stuck due to adverse weather conditions.

"There were no reported serious injuries. The road had been close between the B3414 and the A350 at Warminster to allow the recovery of the vehicles.

"The carriageway has now been reopened."
