There has been “huge opposition” from residents over revised plans for 150 new homes near a Wiltshire sports ground.

In October, a proposal was submitted to build up to 150 residential dwellings to the south of Stanley Lane in Chippenham, which runs between Abbeyfield School and Stanley Park Sports Ground.

Following concerns being raised by locals and town councillors, developers David Wilson Homes lodged a revised scheme with Wiltshire Council.

The latest plans would see the creation of up to 150 new homes adjoining the 47-acre sports ground, alongside associated infrastructure.

But despite alterations to the scheme, residents remain concerned about the impact of increased traffic in the area.

One of these locals is Michael Pritchard.

He said: “My objections were largely concerning increased traffic in the local area and nearby villages, and the timing of the development in relation to the Abbeyfield School expansion.

“I don’t believe that these objections have been addressed and they remain a major source of concern.”

Stephen Pocock added: “There is insufficient infrastructure to support a development of this size.

“The road layout would not cope with the additional traffic.

“Emergency vehicles frequently use the A4, and the traffic congestion could cause problems.”

Chippenham town councillors voted to recommend that Wiltshire Council reject the plans due to the site not being allocated for housing.

Cllr Matthew Short said: “It’s a tricky one… there’s huge opposition from residents, many on traffic reasons.

“But the fact it’s outside of the allocation currently and it could perhaps open up the floodgates of that whole area being developed piece by piece, it is possible.”

But councillors praised the developers for the “sensitive” design of the scheme.

Cllr John Scragg added: “It’s important that we do protect the area between our town and the ridge where Bremhill and Bowood is, but this is a very marginal and small addition to the size of Chippenham.

“I was in favour of this development before and I am now, especially given the way they have addressed the concerns we raised before.”

David Wilson Homes insists the site is a “sustainable location for development” with good transport links to the town centre.

In their revised design and access statement, a spokesperson added: “The Gate Farm site provides an opportunity to deliver an inclusive mix of up to 150 new homes with access to a range of existing facilities, together with extensive multi-functional landscape areas.

“The proposed development will balance key elements to create an attractive, sustainable and integrated addition to Chippenham.”
