The mother of a 15-year-old boy who was stuck for an hour after his foot jammed in a drain on a Trowbridge street has spoken out after hearing it had been left uncovered for months.

Katie Giles, 41, of Talbot Road, only heard of the incident, which happened at about 7pm on Sunday, when a police officer called to tell her that her son Peter Hulbert had been hurt.

Peter, who had been out with friends, had slipped into a hole in the pavement in Lambrok Road leading to water pipes underneath.

He was trapped for an hour and had to be freed by firefighters .

His mother said: “He was very lucky really. It could have been very dangerous if an elderly person had slipped and fallen into it. They could have been seriously hurt.

“What made me really angry is that I went down there shortly after it happened and workmen were fixing it suddenly.

“According to people I have spoken to in that road, they had complained about it being uncovered weeks ago and nothing was done.”

Peter, who attends Springfield School in Calne, was back in class this week but is still suffering after spraining his ankle.

He said: “I was lucky to be with friends at the time, but I didn’t want them to call an ambulance at first as I thought I could get myself out of it.

“My foot was really stuck though and every time I tried to move it I was in a lot of pain.”

Peter said it was only by chance that police drove past after about 40 minutes and his friends raised the alarm.

After police, firefighters and paramedics came to the scene. Peter was freed from the hole after a metal pole was put underneath him and firefighters surrounded him and pulled him up to safety.

He said: “The paramedics said I had a severe sprain and I was really upset about my trainers as they were a present for Christmas and got ripped when I was stuck.”

A spokesman for Wiltshire County Council said the hole in the pavement had not been reported to them.

He said: “If anyone sees anything on the highway that they think is unsafe they should call us and we will make sure it is sorted out.”

A spokesman for Wessex Water said it had received no report about the broken drain cover before Peter's accident but said it had spoken to Peter's family and are now investigating the incident.
