RISING boxing star Nick Blackwell, 18, of Rutland Crescent, Trowbridge, has just turned professional after only three years in the sport.

The former John of Gaunt pupil, who used to play in goal for Trowbridge Town, is expected to make his professional debut at the end of May.

The middleweight from Rutland Crescent knocked out the Birmingham fighter in the fourth round at a sold-out Trowbridge Civic Hall.

The victory takes this record to a perfect 15 wins with no losses as he begins his journey into the professional circuit.

How would your best friend describe you?

I suppose they would say I’m a bit of a laugh, but some of them might say I’m boring because I’m always training and I don’t often go out.

Where would you recommend for a great evening out in Wiltshire?

I like the Cross Guns in Avoncliff – they do really nice food and it’s a good setting down by the river.

What do you do for fun?

I like to do a spot of fishing as a chill-out and relax. When I’m not in training I like going out with friends and having a beer. I also like spending time with my family and girlfriend Tash.

What motto or saying do you try to live your life by?

Train hard, fight easy.

Who in the public eye do you most respect?

I respect people like Ricky Hatton - he’s obviously really rich but he’s still a normal guy. He doesn’t go out and buy fancy cars and he still lives in a normal house. I also admire Joe Calzaghe and like watching him box.

What is your biggest regret?

Not starting boxing earlier. I didn’t start until about 15, which is quite late. I wanted to start when I was about nine but my mum didn’t let me because she doesn’t see the point of two people going into a ring and fighting each other. Also not doing as well as I could have at school.

What is your favourite television programme or film? I like watching a bit of Eastenders. My favourite films are Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch. I like watching films like that.

What local shop/business would you recommend?

West Tackle in Trowbridge – my mate owns the place.

Describe your perfect day.

Not waking up until 2pm and just sitting down in front of the TV and eating loads and loads of food. If it wasn’t for training I’d probably be about six or seven stone heavier than I am now. Now I’ve turned professional my diet will be even more strict.
