Chippenham Town maintained their unbeaten start to pre-seaon last night with a victory over a young Swindon Town side at Hardenhuish Park.

Defender Shaun Lamb opened the scoring for the Bluebirds on 41 minutes after lobbing Mark Scott from the edge of the area, after the young keeper had fumbled a corner from Kyle Bassett.

The Bluebirds had goalkeeper Chris Snoddy to thank for maintaining their lead after a string of fantastic saves, before Sam Allison made it two on 77 minutes following good pressure from Lewis Powell.

Chippenham had previously beaten Highworth Town 3-0 to open their pre-season campaign and also defeated local rivals Salisbury City 3-2 in a thriller at Hardenhuish Park on Saturday.

Early in the game it was the visitors who created the better chances with winger Mark Marshall going close on 24 minutes with a fiercely-struck free kick from the edge of the area.

Welsh youth international Billy Bodin, son of manager for the evening Paul Bodin, should have opened the scoring on 29 minutes but his close-range back post header was again rebuffed by the inspired Snoddy.

Chippenham had their first real chance of the game two minutes later when Ben Highmore found space in the area to meet a Ben Thomson free kick but Scott saved well to force a corner.

Early in the second half, Scott again saved well from a Powell header and on the hour mark Lamb should have doubled his tally for the evening but headed over from a Bassett corner.

Impressive substitute Tareq Khalil, one of a series of trailists attempting to earn a contract at Chippenham, teed up Highmore to head into the bottom corner, only for the effort to be ruled out by the linesman for offside.

The game went quiet in the latter stages of the game with both sides using the outing as an opportunity to test out young players.

On 87 minutes, Marshall again broke clear of the home defence to find himself one on one with Snoddy but, as was symbolic of his entire performance, the young winger dragged his shot low and wide of the post from a good position.

Chippenham will be in action again on Friday evening when they travel to Bremhill View to take on Calne Town in the annual Fred Rutty cup.
